The browser has quietly become the center of modern work.

Employees now rely on browser-based applications for collaboration, development, research, and communication. AI copilots, SaaS platforms, and cloud tools all run directly inside browser sessions. What used to be a simple gateway to the web is now the primary environment where work happens.

The Keep Aware team is excited to release the 2026 State of Browser Security Report, which explores how this shift is reshaping the enterprise security landscape, and why the browser is becoming one of the most important and least protected control points in modern organizations.

The Browser Is Becoming the Operating System for Work

Over the past few years, enterprise work has steadily moved into the browser.

Employees write code, summarize documents, run research, collaborate in SaaS tools, and automate workflows without ever leaving a browser tab. AI copilots and generative tools are increasingly embedded directly into these workflows, making the browser far more than a place to view websites.

In many organizations, the browser is now effectively the operating system for modern knowledge work.

But while work has shifted into the browser, most security architectures still treat it as an extension of network or endpoint security rather than a security layer of its own.

That mismatch is creating a growing visibility gap.

AI Is Redefining Browser Security Risks

The rise of AI has accelerated the browser’s role as the center of modern work. AI assistants, copilots, and browser-based tools are now embedded in everyday workflows, helping employees draft content, analyze data, summarize research, and automate tasks directly within browser sessions.

While these tools unlock significant productivity gains, they also introduce new security challenges. Sensitive data can be pasted into prompts, uploaded to AI systems, or shared across applications in ways traditional security tools often cannot see.

At the same time, the emergence of AI-native browsers is creating a new form of IT sprawl. Each platform introduces its own trust model, data handling practices, and automation capabilities. Even in standardized environments like Chrome or Edge, embedded AI features and agentic browsing capabilities effectively create new execution layers within the browser.

As AI becomes embedded in browser workflows, organizations need greater visibility into how data, users, and AI agents interact within browser sessions.

The Browser Is an Increasingly Attractive Attack Surface

Attackers are also adapting to the browser-centric workplace.

Many modern attacks now target the browser layer itself through phishing pages, malicious extensions, and social engineering delivered within web sessions. Because these attacks occur inside legitimate browser activity, they can bypass many traditional security defenses.

At the same time, sensitive data is frequently uploaded or shared through browser workflows across both corporate and personal accounts, creating additional blind spots for security teams.

The result is a new reality: the browser has become one of the most trusted—and least monitored—environments in the enterprise.
